Recently, the Second “Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) on Campus” event was successfully held on Cherry Blossom Avenue at Jinghu Campus, Zhejiang Yuexiu University.

The event invited a number of inheritors to showcase more than 20 distinctive local ICH items, including Shengzhou xiaolongbao (small steamed bun), Shaoxing dough figurines, Shaoxing Huadiao jiu (a type of Shaoxing Huangjiu), palm-leaf weaving, and traditional pulled sugar craft. Covering a wide range of forms—from handicraft techniques and traditional cuisine to traditional craftsmanship and folk culture—the event brought centuries-old cultural heritage out of exhibition halls and into the campuses. Chinese and international students and faculty were able to engage closely with traditional culture and experience the unique charm of ICH in an immersive way.

The venue was divided into two zones. In the “Interactive ICH Skills Zone,” inheritors gave live demonstrations and offered hands-on guidance. Participants had the opportunity to make dough figurines, try palm-leaf weaving, and decorate wine vessels, experiencing the intricacy and craftsmanship of traditional techniques through practice. In the “ICH Exhibition Zone”, finely crafted bamboo carvings, delicate Cloisonné Filigree craftsmanship, and elegant paper-cut artworks were displayed, showcasing the aesthetic value of intangible cultural heritage.

On the day of the event, long lines queued up at each booth along Cherry Blossom Avenue. Students gathered around the inheritors, watching the demonstrations attentively and trying their hands carefully. Throughout the event, Chinese students and international student volunteers worked together to narrate ICH stories and demonstrate the technical processes in both Chinese and English, helping these traditions transcend language barriers and building a bridge for cultural exchange between China and the world.
