Zhejiang Yuexiu University (ZYU), a full-time institute offering regular undergraduate education, is located in Shaoxing, the hometown of the famous Chinese writer Lu Xun and a well-known ancient city of rich cultural heritage. The history of ZYU dates back to its founding in 1981. After decades of development, it was accredited in 2008 by Ministry of Education of China as a four-year university.
ZYU comprises two campuses, i.e., Jishan and Jinghu, and covers an area of 1,300 mu (approximately 214 hectares) with a total floor area of about 420,000 square meters. Its library has a collection of 1.82 million conventional books/publications and 1.14 million e-books.
Presently, ZYU has an enrollment of over 16,000 full-time undergraduate students against a teaching staff of more than 1,000. Over 42% of its 1,000 regular teachers are full or associate professors, and 80% have received master’s and/or doctoral degrees. Also engaged in the university’s teaching and research are about 100 foreign teachers and scholars from the US, Britain, Canada, South Korea, and Japan, among others.
ZYU consists of 15 schools and its curricula involve 15 foreign language programs, including English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Thai, Czech, Turkish, Polish and Bahasa Indonesia.
ZYU has established an overall structure of majors and disciplines which revolve around foreign languages and literature, characterized by a focus on liberal arts and accompanied by a range of academic courses in economics, business management, network communication, etc. It facilitates the complementary interaction between subjects and disciplines, enabling their coordinated growth. Accordingly, ZYU has won official recognition for its merits in disciplinary construction and development. Foreign Language & Literature is ranked in the list of Zhejiang provincial-level key disciplines and in the Shaoxing municipal-level list of key disciplines are its Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics , French Language and Literature,Chinese Language and Literature as well as Japanese Language and Literature. Meanwhile, ZYU’s Korean language subject is recognized as a key major in Zhejiang Province and placed as a priority for support. Some other majors such as English, French, network communication, and international trade & finance have been honored as emerging majors with distinctive local features.
As a member of the United Nations Academic Impact, ZYU has made steady progress in scientific research. In recent years, ZYU had 23 projects supported by National Foundations, 66 programs sponsored at provincial or ministerial level, and as many as 228 items concerning educational reform won project approval at the municipal level (Shaoxing).
ZYU possesses advanced equipment and facilities for teaching and practice. It boasts a provincial-level center for foreign language application, and 4 municipal-level demonstration centers for teaching practices. All the centers are supported by laboratories of one kind or another, such as Simultaneous Interpreting, Language Lab, Lab for International Business and Trade, and other relevant apparatus as well. And there are language salons for minority language learners.
In May 2015, Xia Baolong, then Party Secretary of Zhejiang Province, paid an inspection visit to ZYU, and he made a remark that ZYU was making vigorous strides forward with clear and practical goals and had scored great achievements.
In the coming years, ZYU will be steadfast in reaching its targeted goals with painstaking efforts and innovative practices so as to pursue excellence in teaching and scientific research and prepare students accomodating the needs of the society and employers.
